BOROUGH COUNCIL.
ORDINARY MEETING
The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: The Mayor (M. E. Perreau, Esq), and Ors. Parkin, S. E. Cowley, Lueinsky, F. Woods, M. IT. Walker, R. McMurray, lit. .]. Thompson and C. Rand. Cr. "WIN STANLEY’S RESIGNATION. A telegram was received from Cr. WinstanJey, resigning his seal on the Council. The Town Clerk read the clause from the Act dealing with the filliny (>/■ otherwise of extraordinary vacancies. Cr. McMurray said he had moved that Cr. Winstanley be granted leave of absence for one night, on the understanding that he would attend subsequent meetings. The Council had been misled in the matter. On the motion of Cr. Walker, theresignation was received with regret, and that the vacancy be not filled. An application was received from Mrs C. K. Woodroofe for an auctioneer’s license. —Granted. HALL CARETAKER’S COTTAGE. A letter was received from. Mr H. Reid, caretaker of the Town Hall, suggesting that a caretaker’s house be erected on the section facing Hall Street and backing on to the Town Hall, and pointing out the greater convenience it would be. He also pointed out that he was 5s a week worse oil now than when he lived in the Town Hall cottage.— Decided to pay Mr Reid an extra 5s per week, pending the erection of a caretaker’s eottag.e
The Town Clerk was instructed to obtain information re loan from the Advances to Workers re construction of a suitable building. RIVER COMMISSION REPORT. The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote, enclosing a copy of the liiiding of the commission of the Mana-watu-Oroua River Board scheme. —Received. EPIDEMIC PRECAUTIONS. Prom, the Health Department, giving instructions in case of an epidemic.—Received. MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE. The Mayor, who was delegate to the Municipal Conference, recently held in Palmerston North, reported on same. IM PROVING INTERSECTIONS. Cr. Cowley advocated the clearing of the grass on the corner of •Main Street, Park Street and Avenue Road, and also at the junction of Avenue Road and Russell Street. Cr. Walker mentioned the matter of asphalting the corner of the roads leading on to the asphalted roads. —The road foreman was instructed to clear the triangular pieces of grass on the corners of Avenue Road and Main Street, and Avenue Road and Russell Street. STORM WATER.
Crs. Thompson and Lueinsky referred to the necessity for clearing culverts and drains to prevent a recurrence of the Hooding- by storm water, which hud done so much damage last year to various properties.
The Mayor said this matter had not been overlooked, and action would jje taken to prevent a recurrence this year. Cr. Lueinsky stated that a large drain had been constructed outside the borough boundary, and the culverts for the outlet within the borough were not large enough to carry off' the water, hence the Hooding of the property. It was decided to request the road foreman to submit a report on the culverts and drains in the borough, with estimates of the cost of repairs and renewing old culverts, with a view of avoiding a recurrence of the Hooding Avliich occurred last year. It was also decided that the Public Works committee make a tour of inspection of the drains and report to the next meeting of the Council. ROAD FOREMAN'S REPORT. The road foreman reported as follows:—During the past month the road staff have been engaged on the following works. —Top dressing Johnston Street, asphalting south side Clyde Street, metalling and grading portion of Avenue Road ready for steam 1 roller, patching ruts Sandon Road, reparing bank of drain and widening footpath Coley Street, laying culvert and clearing footpath Whyte Street, and general maintenance. Acting under instructions from the Mayor, the water channel in Main and Clyde Streets have been Hushed twice a week. We are now continuing the top dressing of Johnston and Russell Streets. —Adopted.
GAS MANAGER’S REPORT,
The Gas manager reported as follows; —I have commenced tarring the apparatus. One holder is finished and the other partly coated. I hope to complete the work, this month. 1 have put down a strip of concrete in the coal shed as the Avood was always needing repairs. Several services have been cleared out and on June 28th a motorcar fell into the drain in Johnston Street, breaking services, this was repaired at once. —Adopted.
