HEMP MARKET.
JANUARY GRADING RETURNS.
The grading for hemp tow, stripper tow, and stripper slips for the month of January have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows:—
Nineteen bales at Pieton were graded tine. Fourteen bales, at Auckland, 130 at Wellington, 200 at Foxton were rejected.
The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number l or the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Fine 19 (21), good fair 777 (637), high fair 3402 (4452), low fair 2611 (2930), common 724 (307), rejected 344 (193), condemned nil (14), a total of 7877 bales as against 8554 bales graded the same ( period last year, a decrease of 677 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 1533, Wellington 2404, Foxton 2310, Wairoa 172, Pieton 79, Blenheim 84, Dunedin 56, Port Chalmers 235, Huff 932, Lyttelton 72.
The following shows the number of bates in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis: Ist grade 404 (394), 2nd grade 1474 (1846), 3rd grade 335 (393), condemned 106 (78), a total of 2,319 bales as against 2711 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 392 bales.
The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 442, Wellington 577, Foxton 465, A airoa 48, Pieton 31, Blenheim 46, Pt. Chalmers 112, Bluff 415, Lyttelton 57, Dunedin 6, Waikuku 120. Stripper Tow: —One hundred and twenty-three bales at Wellington and 144 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade. Forty-four bales at Foxton were graded 3rd grade and one from Wellington was condemned. A total of 312 bales as against 221 bales graed the same period last venr, an increase of 91 bales.
Stripper slips: —Seven bales at
Auckland, 55 at the Bluff, and 1(5 at Wjairoa were graded 2nd grade. Eighteen at Wellington, and 14(5 at the Bluff were passed for export. One bale at Auckland and one at the Bluff were condemned.' The total number graded was 244 bales as against 45)0 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 240 bales.
