CALL AT MARQUESAS ISLANDS.
Melbourne, February 9.
A wireless message from the Renown states that a day ahead of lime, but. punctual as lo the hour, the Royal cruiser swung into the harbour of Nukuhiva, steaming to her anchorage without slackening speed until tlid last few minutes. The French Administrator officially called, and was received with due formality with a salute. Later in Ihe afternoon the Duke and Duchess of York returned the
call. They found a colourful gathering awaiting on the beach. The Marquesans are among the handsomest of the Polynesians, and they fully bore out their reputation. The men, mostly in white shirts and trousers, and the women in gaily-hued gowns with flmver-ehap-letted heads, stood respectfully as (lie Royal Party passed on their walk down the village street to the famous mission where Robert Louis Stevenson was once known. Returning to the ship the Duchess presented a bouquet to the smallest brown child.
