MAKERUA SWAMP.
PROPOSALS FOR ROADING,
TO OPEN UP NEW LAND. i ___ Proposals arc on foot for the leading of the Makerua swamp which, inter alia, will, if carried out, provide a shorter and more level road between Shannon and Palmerston North. In placing these facts before the Horowhenua County Council on Saturday, Mr. A. Seifert, who, with Mr. IT. R. Fnrqnhar, formed a deputation asking that the district be formed into a special rating area to carry out the work, stated that his company and the Whitanui Flaxmilling Company had joined together to road the swamp, an area of about, 5500 acres being involved. A lot of his land was now carrying grass that was formerly in flax, and until it was roaded it icould not he property developed. The proposals provided for a much shorter route between Shannon and Palmerston North, and when the roading was completed he thought that the existing suspension bridge over .the Manawatu would be replaced by a bigger structure. Mr. Farqukar explained several details in regard to the plans, which, he mentioned, had already been before the Lands and Survey Office.
Doubt was expressed by the chairman (Cr. G. A. Monk) as to whether the council could raise money to spend on undedicated roads. It might be that the roads would have to be dedicated to the council.
After brief discussion as to the best way of dealing with the request the matter was referred to the finance committee to investigate and report. 1
