FOXTON-SHANNON HIGHWAY
NIGHT FERRY CHARGES ADOPTED. At yesterday’s meeting of tin* Manawatu County Council, a letter was received from the Public Works Department, pointing out that the Highways Board was of the opinion that the direct route to the river crossing if possible should be adopted and recommended the Council to proceed with the necessary legislation. On the subject of the Council making charges for the use of the Shannon punt, the Highways Board had no objection to this between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., but the Board would not subsidise operation costs during these hours. The County Clerk submitted the following schedule of charges; — Foot passengers, 6d each; horse and rider, Is each; vehicle and one horse, Is 6d each; every additional horse, Gd each; cars (private), Is 6d each; service cars, charabanc or lorry, 2s each; exceptions, doctors in cases of sickness and councillors and officials on duty. The Council resolved to inspect the site of the new highway from Foxton to Shannon and approved of the schedule of charges in regal’d to the use of the punt at night.
Complaints as to the unsatisfactory working of the ferry were dealt with in committee.
