NEW YEAR HONOURS.

DOAnNION LTST. Auckland, January 1. Tire Governor-General announces that on the occasion of the New Year His Majesty-the King has been graciously pleased to confer the following honours upon the gentlemen whose names appear below: — Knight Commander of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (K.C.M.G.): The Hon. Charles Perrin Skerrett, Chief Justice of New Zealand. Knight Bachelor: —Robert Donald Douglas Maclean Esq., of Hawke’s BayCompanion of the Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.). John Alexander, Esq., barrister, of Auckland. Charles Westwood Earle, Esq., of the “Dominion,” Wellington. SIR CHARLES SKERRETT, K.C.M.G. Sir Charles Skerrett, K.C.M.G., is Chief Justice of New Zealand, having been appointed to that position in succession to the Right Hon. Sir Robert. Stout, in November, 1925. Born in India, Sir Charles Skerrett was educated in Wellington, and commenced his career as a law clerk'in the Wellington Magistrate’s Court. Mr Skerrett showed eminent qualifications in his profession from liis first associations with legal work, and his ability so far proclaimed itself that in 1907 he was made a King’s Counsel. Sir Charies Skerrett has always taken a keen interest in all forms of sport, and before his elevation to the "Chief Justiceship, he was president of the New Zealand Law Society. He was also president of the Sports Protection League and the Licensing Reform Association. STR R. D. D. MACLEAN, K.B. Sir R. D. Douglas Maclean, K. 8., who resides at Napier, is a son of the late Hou Sir Donald Maclean, who was a. prominent figure in the early days of the Dominion, especially in Hawke’s Bay. Sir R. D. D. Maclean was born in Wellington, in 1852, and was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and in England, and became a barrister-at-law, Middle Temple. In Hawke’s Bay lie was for years actively associated with local bodies, and from 1890 to 1899 be was member of Napier in the House of Representatives. MR. C. W. EARLE, C.M.G. Mr C. W. Earle, C.M.G., is managing director of the Wiellington Publishing Co. Ltd., and editor of “The Dominion.” He is president of the New Zealand Newspaper Proprietors’ Association, which offic-e he lias held since 1921, and has been intimately connected with the Press of Wellington and New Zealand since 1887. MR, J. ALEXANDER, C.M.G. Mr John Alexander, C.M.G., is a well-known Auckland barrister. He has been closely connected with the Nnvv League and has done good service as official visitor to the Avondale Mental Hospital. Mr Alexander is a member of the Prisons Board.
