HOLIDAY ACCIDENTS
Christchurch, January 3. A young’ —mountaineer, Roger . Chester, of Watson's road Papanui, met with an accident on Thursday, which though not serious, meant a very trying experience. He, with a companion, Ivan Tucker, joined a party that set out to climb Mount Rolleston, but the top being hidden with mist it Avas decided to make towards Harman Pass. , At the height of 300 feet Chester was traversing a shingle face and, starting to slide was crushed between two large stones, a piece of the flesh of the calf of one leg being torn away. First aid was rendered by one of the party and then the slow journey back was started. The river bad to be crossed five times in the twentymile return to the old West Coast road. Here they fortunately met a motorist who conveyed them to Arthur’s Pass and the wound was treated by a medical man. Chester is making good progress. Dargaville, January 3. Early on New Year’s morning two young men named Frank Cossill and Jim Hodges were boiling a motor-cycle chain in kerosene in a local factory. The kerosene caught fire, and Hodges lifted the tin to the door but when it got too hot he put it down, and Cossill went to throw the tin outside, the kerosene exploding in his face and shoulder. He was so severely burned that he had to be sent to the hospital. His eyes also are injured.. Auckland, January 3. Alfred Moon, aged 23, died in •the hospital from injuries received in a motor-cycle accident at Kohimarania. The machine left the road in the darkness and struck a stone embankment, throwing the rider on the rocks and causing a fracture of the skull. / Auckland, January 3. A boy named Philip Clyde Ballantyne, the only son of Mr. C. M. Ballantvne, of Tc Kamvhata, was drowned in Lake Wnikare yesterday. He was in a flat-bottomed boat with Messrs. Hatfield, Minns and Ramsay, when the boat capsized. Ramsay and Minns supported Ballantyne, who could not swim, until Ramsay himself had to struggle ashore. Minns and the boy both sank.' The former rose to the surface, but the boy did not. His body has not yet been recovered.Deceased was a college student and was spending a holiday with his . parents. Auckland, January 3. The two-months’ old baby of Mr and Mrs Paul of Ponsonhv, was found suffoctaed in its cot, presumably through burying its 'head in the bedclothes. Timaru, Last Night. At the inquest to-night on the hbdy of John William Hobbs, the fifteen-year-old son of John Hobbs, of Timaru, a verdict was returned of accidentally drowned while bathing in Milford Lagoon, near Tenmka. The action of deceased’s mates in attempting to rescue him was commended.
