Manawatu Herald TUESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1926. PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS.
THE public meeting was unanimous in deciding upon Easton Park as the site for public swimming baths and in transferring the sum of £9OO odd, raised by the public, to the Borough Council as soon as the work is commenced. The decision of the meeting correctly reflects public opinion. It now remains for the Borough Council to carry out the wishes of the public with the least possible delay. Municipal baths will add to the duties of the olliee stall, but this can be met satisfactorily, and should not be used
as an excuse for delay. The objection that the money raised may not lie sufficient, to cover construction has been answered by Mr Edwards. To attempt to place a loan before the ratepayers for a supplementary sum would not only offer an excuse for delay, but it would assuredly be turned down. Once the baths
are constructed and the public realise the benefits derived from them. finance, if necessary, would be provided for added conveniences. As a matter of fact, the revenue derived from the baths under proper management should not only be sufficient to meet administration
and maintenance, but should return a surplus. Had the meeting decided on other than municipal control, the scheme would have resulted in
confusion and failure. There is no doubt that every tiling is now set to go straight on, and we hope the Borough Council will display the same enterprising spirit, in this matter as they did in the reconstruction of the Town Ilall. ■
