The death took place at Tiakitahuna yesterday, of a pioneer settler, in the person of Mr Matthew Hamilton, aged 9G years. He had resided in this district since 18fi7. Miss M. Barber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Barber of Motuiti, and a member of the Palmerston North Hospital nursing staff was successful in the recent State examination for nurses, securing over 75 per cent. Miss Ethel C. Desmond, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Desmond, of Foxton, was successful in passing the recent State examination for nurses, gaining 75 per cent. Miss Desmond is on the staff of the Masterton Hospital. Speaking at the presentation ceremony to Sir James Wilson, at Sanson yesterday, Mr Thomas Masters, who had known Sir James since the very early days, said that he felt it an honour to add his tribute to the great work of Sir James. He would never forget the happy meetings they had had on the council when Sir Janies was chairman. It was unique in local body history, he thought, that Sir James, on consenting to take office did so on the understanding that he would not accept. any salary, and as far as Mr Msters knew, Sir James had never received any emolument for his services. (Applause). He concluded by wishing Sir James and Lady Wilson the compliments of the season.
