MOTORING ACCIDENT ON SHANNON-LEVIN ROAD
FATALITY FOLLOWS ACT OF KINDNESS. A dangerous (urn in the main Shannon-Levin road on what is known as the Buckly hill, was the scene, of a motoring accident late on Saturday afternoon when a man, whose name is believed lo he R. Boonfield, a stranger to the district, lost his life. The car was driven by Joseph Patrick Lavin, business agent, of Island Bay, Wellington, who was proceeding to Levin. _ When passing through Shannon he picked up Boonfield, who desired a lift along (he road. The Buckley hill is about: three miles on the Levin side of Shannon and on going down the decline, Mr. Lavin observed the approach of another car coming up the hill. His yiew of the latter, however, was subsequently blocked hv a turn of the road, and expecting to meet the up-coming ear any moment, lie naturally kept well out on his left side. Unfortunately he kept too near Hie edge of the narrow road with the result that the ear went over the. side, to drop 20 feet. Mr. Lavin managed to extricate himself, hut found his companion lying in a drain underneath the ear. AH he could do was to keep the man’s head up out of the water until! assistance arrived. Dr. Bell of Shannon, was hastily summoned but on arrival, pronounced life extinct as a result of a fractured skull and other injuries sustained in the fall. An inquest was opened at Shannon festerday afternoon,'and after the evidence of Dr. Bell had been tdken, was adjourned till December 23. Mr. A. Eraser was the presiding coroner. Boonfield, who was a man -between 30 and 35 years of age, is said to have relatives in the Hawera district.
