WOMEN JUSTICES.

THE FIRST LIST. Eighteen prominent New Zealand women, whose names were announced yesterday morning, have been chosen as the first of their sex in the Dominion to hold office as Justices of the Peace, in accordance with the legislation passed last session. The list contains four appointments each from Wellington and Dunedin, five from Auckland, and one each from Timam and Onehnnga. The appointees are as follows: — Wellington: Annie Jane Corliss, Janet Fraser, Cybelc Ethel Kirk, Annie McViear; Onehunga: Blanche Eleanor Carnachan; Timam: Mary Raymond; Christchurch: Annie Isobel Fraser, Annie Elizabeth Herbert, Elizabeth Reid AlcComhs, Eveline Anne Alary Roberts, and Elizabeth Best Taylor; Auckland: Nellie Elizabeth Ferner, Sarah Elizabeth Jackson, and Hilda Alargaret Northern ft; Dunedin: Nora Stuart Dick, Edith Frances Cloquet Leech, Eulalie Violet Roberts, and Jane Elizabeth Runeiman. Tn announcing the initial appointments under the Act, the Minister of Justice (Hon. F. J. Rolleston) stated that the Government had decided to confine the first appointments to women already serving as Asosciate members of the Children’s Courts, and to those who held prominent positions in the community, either on local bodies or in women s or social ovganisatins. A further list of men Justices, added the ATinisler, would be gazetted immediately after the New Year.
