OROUA DOWNS.
SCHOOL PTCNIC. Favoured with beautiful weather, the scholars of the Oroua Downs public school, together with their parents and friends, held a most enjoyable picnic in Mr Hammond’s grounds on Friday last. A committee of ladies provided most sumptuously for the inner man, and both old and young showed their appreciation of the good things provided. In the afternoon races were run for the scholars, some exciting finishes providing thrills for the onlookers. At the conclusion of the races, the children gathered together under the shade of the trees to take part in the prize-giving. At the request of the school committee, Rev. S. Peryman, of Foxton, presented the prizes, these being awarded for attendance, place in standard, races and proficiency. No less than six scholars gained the lastnamed honour. The prize-giving over, “Boy’’ Davey stepped forward and in an excellent. speech, asked Air Nicol, the headmaster, to accept a token ot appreciation from the school for Mrs Nicol and for himself, an Evorsharp pencil. Air Nicol, in replying, said that, he was completely taken by surprise but would value most highly the spirit prompting the gifts as well as the gifts themselves. He was sorrv to have to say “goodbye to some of the highest standard who were leaving school. They had be£3 “a good crowd” and had done honour to themselves and to the school.
