PERJURY.
CHARGES AGAINST POLICEMAN' Dunedin, Last Night. Another phase of what has come to be known as “The Lockett Case” was begun this morning, when two charges of perjury were preferred against Constable George Macartney. The charges were (1) that on November 3 he swore that he never at: any time struck J. W. Lockett a blow of any description, either with his clenched fist or otherwise dux- ■ ing the struggle which took place in Kenimure Rd., on July 23; (2) that he also swore that Lockett was very drunk .when lie arrested him find that he was staggering all over the road, that he was very drunk and that at the watehhouse he -was still drunk. Mr Hanlon who appeared for Macartney, said that he was not prepared to go on with the case, and asked for an adjournment over the holidays. The Magistrate (Mr Bundle) said that defendant had been brought up on summons, therefore an adjournment was quite in order. He would adjourn the matter until January--14-th.
