ANNUAL SCHOOL CONCERT.

The annual concert by pupils of the local District High School took place in the Town Hall on Thursday evening and was greeted by a bumper house. The children acquitted themselves very well and the programme reflected credit upon the teaching staff, and particularly on Miss Dent, upon whom most of the coaching fell. The stage was tastefully decorated and the children entered into the programme with zest. Miss Los[io opened proceedings with a pianoforte selection, followed by a signalling welcome by Bessie Crowe and Malcolm Mason, of the Guides and Scouts respectively; the letters were rapidly and correctly displayed on cards held by the grouped children. The nursery rhymes bv the children in characters, were very amusing. The “country dance” by the Girl Guides, attired in their neat uniforms, was gracefully executed. Katie Roore and Madge McColl contributed a wellbalanced pianoforte, duet. Joyce Shaw and Alary Martin created much merriment in the singing of “That Certain Party,” the scholars taking up the chorus with gusto. Molly Downes sang “The Gift,” with nice expression. The folk song “Village Fair,” was sung very nicely by St. IT pupils. The old-time duet “You Can’t Play in our Yard,” by Mary Martin and Joyce Shaw lost none of its freshness by these young artists, whose antics created much amusement. In response to a vociferous encore, they sang “Hullo Tutu." The Boy Scouts gave an exhibition of physical drill with fine precision. The seniors sang “The Cheery Song" very tunefully and the humorous item “Pushed Throng the Window." The “Daisy Song" by the grouped girls, the centre ones representing daisies, was particularly pleasing. Miss Pat Satherlcv gave selections on the accordeon and to the delight of the audience, who marked the effort with thunderous applause. The first half concluded with the part song “Fair Shines the Moon” and “Bells” by the seniors. The second half was taken up with the humorous cantata “Soot and the Fairies.” The grouping of Ihe queen, fairies anl other characters midst waving lilies, presented a pleasing picture. The singing and spoken parts were tuneful and distinct. The following were the characters: “Queen Lily," Bessie Crowe; “Captain Soot,” Harold Newton; “Dr. Sunlight,” Gordon Stone, “secretary," Jack Irons; “Lord Bootlace,” lan Booth: “Baron Hairbrush,” Brian Walton; “Lady Soapsuds,” Myrtle Hughes; “Wag” Horace Tongs; “fairies” Molly Downes, Sylvia Williams, Madge McColl, Audry Barron, Mary Martin, Meta Mason, Elsie Henrioksen, Greta Coley, Joyce Shaw, Phyllis Tongs; Black Brigade,”.
