The County Engineer (Mr. G. Hickford) submitted the following report on the Awahou riding.—A good deal of metal lias been carted along the Foxton-Shannon road during the past month, and yet metal is urgently required to complete repairs and put the road in anything like order. An inspection was made of the proposed new road line In the site of the new bridge over (he Manawatu river. The road line as laid off by the Department enters a very bad swampy bog Hat which would cost a considerable sum to construct a road over, as the spoil required for the embankment would have to be carted a considerable distance. With a view to getting a higher and more direct road line to the proposed bridge, a further inspection was made and it was ascertained that, the natives would not allow any alteration from the original surveyed road. It is essential to have the road constructed on high and dry country and the road must be made on the very first survey line, or on the accretion south of Mr. Pigott’s residence.

Stone crushers. —Owing to several repairs and adjustments that had lo be carried out to the crushers the out-put for last month was only about 1,000 yards of all grades of stone. The present contract for quarrying and carting metal to the stone crushing plant has run out, and it will be necessary to make provision for calling fresh tenders for a further supply of crushed stone.

Tramway.—General repair worklias been carried out along the line at various places. A number of decayed sleepers have been replaced, and several sections to the line cleared of all growth and weeds. A three-foot concrete pipe culvert has been placed under the line near Himatangi, and it will be necessary to put in a similar culvert opposite Mr. Ross’ property during the summer months. During the last few months very few sleepers have come to hand, and an increased supply is urgently required.—Received.
