Manawatu Herald THURSDAY, DECEMBER 2, 1926 LOCAL AND GENERAL
The snow-capped Tararua mountains presented a magnificent spectacle this morning.
The floor of the new Town Hall for dancing was very favourably commented upon by visitors present at last night’s ball.
A social afternoon under the auspices of All Saints’ Ladies’ Guild will take place in the Town Hail supper-room at 2.30 o’clock tomorrow (Friday) afternoon.
Rain fell on 12 days during the month of November, the maximum fall one inch, occurring on the 7th The total rainfall for the month was 3.03 inches.
The annual concert and prize giving in connection with the Pre
byterian Sabbath School will take place in the school hall to-morrow evening at 7.30 o’clock.
Special praise is due to the Borough Council staff, who gave their services voluntarily in making the final presparations for the opening of the Town Hall yesterday. Such hearty co-operation was keenly appreciated by the Council.
“I notice that you have introduced several innovations in your hall which were condemned in the Levin Hall,” said Mr Hobson, Mayor of Levin, when speaking at the opening ceremony yesterday. “This goes to show,” he continued, “that your ideas are correct.”
The vital statistics for the month of November were as follows, the figures for the corresponding month of last year being in parentheses:— Births 4 (4), deaths 3 (nil), marriage notices issued 2 (1), marriage by Registrar nil (nil), Births, Maoris, 2 (nil); deaths, Maoris 1 (nil).
“The poeple of Foxton are to be congratulated upon what I consider to be one of the best appointed halls either for picture projection or public amusements in the Dominion," was the comment of Mr H. McMillan, of the De Lux Theatre, Levin, yesterday. When the Mayor (Mr Perreau) was presented with the neatly-en-graved casket by the Town Hall contractors at yesterday’s function, he was asked to open it. Failing in his attempt, he exclaimed: “I don’t believe in looking a gift horse in the mouth,” a remark which was received with applause. Mr M. R. Varnham, the architect and clerk of works for the new Town Hall, informed our representative yesterday that in all his experience he had never worked with a better set of men in every department of the construction as were employed. There had not been any disagreement from the commencement to the completion of the work. The death took place at the resilience of his daughter, Mrs W. McNab, Day's Bay, Wellington, yesterday, of Mr William George Haybittle, at the age of 76 years. The late Mr Haybittle was one of Feilding’s pioneer business men, and took an active part in public affairs. He was one of the founders of the Feilding Bowling Club, and was a past president and life member of the Feilding Jockey Club. An accident occurred on the Paekakariki Hill on Saturday afternoon, which might have been more serious than it turned out. Mr J. C. Good, of Foxton, was coming north in a Ford van, and on this side of the Hill met a srevice car travelling to Wellington. The latter in passing the van left the road and went over the bank, fortunately without capsizing, though there was not a very big drop at the place. The car collided with a tree and the upper structure sustained some damage as a result, and also when being hauled back to the road. There were several passengers in the car, but no one was injured. Mr Good did not know of the accident until overtaken by another car and informed of the mishap, when he immediately went back and gave what assistance he could to put the service car on the road again.— Otaki Mail.
