NEWS AND NOTES.

A movement is being set afoot for the establishment of swimming baths at Shannon.

Shannon is the only Borough in the Wellington province'where electricity is used for sheep shearing, (says thqNews). Mr A. H, Tocker, who has been appointed Professor of Economics at Canterbury College, was at one time for some years first assistant at the Mangatainoka school.

. Astonishment that the Morman Church had any recognised standing in New Zealand was expressed by Mr Justice Herdman in the Hamilton Supreme) Court this week. He questioned the Crown Solicitor, Mr H. T. Gillies, regarding the institution, and Mr Gillies replied that the church was authorised to solemnise marriages. His Honour said: “I did not know that. I am astonished to hear it.”

There passed away recently at Palmerston N. a colonist of over 03 years, in the person of the late Mr James Lambert Clapham. Mr Clapham was born at Wansford, England, in 1840 and arrived in New Zealand in 1863, landing at Lyttelton. Some years later he removed to the Rangitikei district and spent many years in the Holcombe and CoTyton districts. He leaves a family of three sons and four daughters to mourn their, loss. Mrs Clapham predeceased her husband a few months ago.

It is curious how smokers will “fancy” some of their pipes and fail to “take” to others. It Is not a cpiestion of cost, either. J. M. Barrie, an inveterate smoker, has quite a collection of pipes and some of them are valuable. And yet one of his greatest favourites is a little wooden “nose-warmer” for which he gave fourpence! Tastes in tobacco vary in; the same way. Some smokers use only the most expensive brands while others find ordinary plug or even common shag more to their liking. The flavour appeals to them. But talking —or rather writing—about flavour, have you tried the New' Zealand grown tobaccos'? The leaf contrary to the usual practice, is toasted, and this'imparts a peculiarly delicious flavour. These tobaccos, moreover, contain very little nicotine and are consequently comparatively harmless. They arc manufactured in various strengths to suit all tastes. “Riverhead Gold” is a mild aromatic, “toasted Navy Cut” (Bulldog Label) medium and “Cut Plug No. 10” (Bull’s Head) full flavoured. They are meeting with a big sale. C’aversham Mixture is the latest addition. 26.
