HEAVY TRAFFIC.

* ALLOCATION OF FEES IN THIS AREA. A MAGISTERIAL DECISION. At the Palmerston Courthouse on July 14th, Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., sat as arbitrator in a dispute between the counties and boroughs of No. 10 heavy traffic license district concerning the allocation of heavy traffic license fees. The district comprises the boroughs of Palmerston, Feilding, Foxton, Shannon, Levin and Otaki, and the counties of Kairanga, Oroua, Pohangina, Ilorowhenua and Mali awatu. At the hearing in July Mr Stout reserved his decision. At the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, in reply to a query as to whether'a decision hacLbecn arrival at, Mr Stout stated that one-third of the heavy traffic fees would be divided among the boroughs, and two-thirds among the counties, the distribution to be on the basis of capital values and mileage of metalled roads controlled by the different bodies. As far as possible, he had made an equitable distribution from the data and facts placed before him. He did not think the allocation a matter that should be referred to a Magistrate; it was really for the Public Mo.ks Department, which should be able to fix the basis by regulation. After that id would be merely a matter of accountancy.
