SHOPKEEPERS AND CHRISTMAS HOLIDAYS.
•4 ■ ■ Last year a little confusion existed in respect of the right of shopkeepers to remain open on the statutory half-holiday during ’Xmas and New Year weeks. From information secured yesterday it would appear that in view of the fact that ’Xmas Day and New Year’s Day, which fall on a Saturday, will lie observed as full holidays, shopkeepers may, by giving notice in writing to the Inspector of their intention to do so, change the holiday from the Wednesday to tho Saturday and so remain open all day on both Wednesday—December 22 and 20. The notice in writing, however, is most essential. The only exception is where an award provides for closing on the statutory half-holiday (Wednesdav) or any named day, as in the case of butchers and grocers. ’Xmas and New Year’s Eve may be observed as late nights instead, of Saturday, when shops may remain open until 10 p.m.
