THE IMMORTALITY OF ACTION.
An article written by Mr William Caine, the novelist, shortly before his death, and recently published in the London Morning' Post, is particularly interesting when read in conjunction with (lie remarkable pronouncement of Sir Oliver Lodge concerning the permanency of life itself. Mr Caine expressed his belief in the survival of our acts after death, about which, he contends, none of us can be for one moment,. in doubt. “The reflection is by no means a comfortable one, for it casts a load of responsibility upon us which is positively horrifying, and beside which death, as a terror, pales into insignificance.” Mr Caine wrote: “It is life that is important —and what we do with it. Here is a real, intelligible immortality which none of us can avoid ,or deny. No act of faith is necessary to believe in it; indeed, no one who is sane can do other than admit its existence. We can never lie sure of the effect, either immediate or in futurity, of any action that we may perform. A kind one may result in disaster; an unkind one in somebody’s salvation. But I think the chances are in favour of the kind action having a good result rather than a bad, and this, it seems to me, is enough to warrant us in trying to lx; kind rather than cruel to one another. And so it is not what is going to happen to us after death that should trouble us, but what influences we have here set and arc setting in motion before he comes to us. No, death is of no importance.’’
