NEWS AND NOTES.
A number of hares killed in North Otago recently have been found to be suffering from hydatid cysts. Somcj have also been discovered totally blind. The cause of the blindness has not been traced. New Zealand now has the second largest number of motor cars per bead of population, of any country in the world. America number of motor cars per head of population and New Zealand, is second with one car to every 11 people, according to the latest Board of Trade returns. The circular letter from the Manawatu County Council suggesting that its trnffilc. inspector (Mr. W. Berry) act for all the counties in No. 0 Main Highways District was tabled at Saturday’s) meeting of the Poll angina County Council. It was decided that the council had no need for the services of the officer. ‘T ask all who are sure that! they have been .in touch with their dead to rise and testify,” said Sir Conan Doyle, speaking to an audience of eight thousand at a spiritualist service in remembrance at the Albert Hall. About two thousand men and women responded to the request. “Thank God that there are so many,” said Sir Conan Doyle. “I say that in five years there won’t lie one in such a gathering who will not rise.” A rare migratory bird, the longtailed cuckoo, a native of the islands in the South Pacific, was found dead on the verandah.of a house in Napier a few days ago. The bird was about the* size of the tui, but had a much stronger bill and a larger head. It was barred and streaked with a beautiful brown plumage above, and below had.white feathers streaked with brownishblack. Its habits are migratory, bul it visits both the New Zealand islands in October and November. It is said to breed in this country but the grey warbler performs the task of rearing the young. These cuckoos leave this country in the late autumn, and return in early October.
It is the roasting of coffee berries that results in the development of the exffuisitc flavour so much appreciated by coffee drinkers. That is well known. But it is not so well known that our New Zealand grown tobaccos are now subjected to the same roasting or toasting process and with the same result. The flavour is brought fully out, while at the same y time the deleterious properties of the tobacco are destroyed. All tobaccos, no matter where grown, have this in common that
they contain nicotine, some more, some less. And it is this poison that is chiefly responsible for the sufferings of those who indulge too freely in the use of the fragrant weed. Heart and nerves are generally affected and often the eyesight. Scientists now tell us that toasting neutralises part of the nicotine and that toasted tobaccos may, therefore, be smoked with impunity. They recommend Riverhead Gold, mild and aromatic; Toasted Navy Cut (Bulldog), medium strength, the full bodied Cut Plhg No. 10 (Bullhead label) .and Caversham Mixture, 'All arc toasted. 10
