SUPPRESSION OF A NAME.

MAGISTRATE DECLINES TO DIRECT PRESS., Dunedin, November 5. Mr T. O’Shea, who appeared in a Magistrate’s Court case to-day, in which a man was charged with having been found on licensed premises after hours, asked that his client’s name should be suppressed, pointing out that he would probably lie dismissed from his employment if his name was broadcasted. Mr J. G. L. Hewitt, S.M., said that lie would willingly do anything to save the man, but unfortunately lie bad no power to make an order preventing the publication of bis name. He could only do so in a case in which jj conviction might involve imprisonment. • Mr O’Shea then asked the Magistrate to make a direction to the Press, but Mr Hewitt said it would not lie proper for him to do such a thing. “The Press has its responsibility and I have mine,” be said.
