AEROPLANE RETURNS TO CHRISTCHURCH.
At twenty minutes past two this afternoon Capt. Buckley and AirMechanic Smith left Foxton on their second attempt to return to Christchurch in the aeroplane which they have used in aerial survey work for the Manawatu-Oroua River Board. Weather conditions were favourable but the ground was in a very bad state. Wired conditions from different parts between here and Christchurch were very satisfactory. The Government Meteorologist wired that Capt. Buckley should make an endeavour to return to-day as the present fine weather would only hold three days-and then be followed by a southerly. On speeding over the ground preparatory lo getting away* the wheels of the machine sent clouds of water and spray right over tho machine. The ’plane appeared to take off easily. despite its heavy load, and, as it mounted into the air both pilot and mechanic turned and waved a farewell lo a small group of' onlookers on the ground. A direct line was, then taken south and the ’plane dipped a farewell over the town and disappeared from sight in a southerly direction. Cnpl. Buckley expected to arrive in Christchurch' about 5.30 p.m.
