NEW COURT HOUSE WANTED.
CHAMBER OP COMMERCE OBJECTS TO PATCHING OLD BUILDING. LETTER TO MINISTER OF JUSTICE. The local Chamber of Commerce at ‘ Thursday night’s meeting expressed surprise that the Public Works Department had invited tenders for renovations to the local Courthouse, which is not only an eye-sore to the main throughfare, but is worm-eaten, and in a state of general decay. It was pointed out that a request had been made to the Minister of Justice for a new building, and that the Minister had promised to inspect the courthouse during the present Parliamentary recess. A resolution was unanimously carried, respectfully requesting the Minister to defer accepting any tender for the proposed renovations until he had made his promised visit. The following letter has been forwarded to the Minister: — “I am directed to inform you that at last night’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce, a resolution was unanimously! carried, respectfully requesting the Minister of Justice to hold over the acceptance of a tender for repairs to the Foxton Courthouse until the Minister has personally inspected the building, which, ho has consented to do during the Parliamentary recess. The Chamber is of the opinion that to patch up the present antiquated and worm-eaten structure is a waste of public money, and that it would l;e more economical to carry on under existing conditions until a grant is sanctioned for a new building.”
