FOOTBALL.

DEVONSHIRE DEFEAT MAORIS BY 20 TO NIL.

London, November 3. The Maori Rugby football team was beaten by Devonshire by 20 points to nil. Eleven thousand people watched Devonshire’s surprising triumph at Devonport, over the Maoris by 20 points to nil. The home side was cleverer all round except in the first quarter of an hour, when Richards, the scrum half, was absent through injuries. After his return, Devonshire was completely superior. Cook dribbled over for the first try and Stanley kicked a penalty goal, and then Braddon scored an excellent try. In the second half, Devon repeatedly attacked, but failed to increase the lead until the last quarter of an hour, when the side completely over, ran the Maoris. Davis beat three men, bluffed Potaka, and scored at the corner post. Stanley rounded off a reverse passing movement with Granger and scored under the posts. Luddington goaling five minutes later after Richards had pierced the defence. Stanley obtained a similar try, which was not converted. The Devon pack dominated the serums and the backs combined magnificently. The Maoris weie clearly surprised by the excellence of their opponents. The Maoris were disappointing in their handling, which was ill-timed and uncoitain. They made many blunders, probably due to their opponents’ deadly tackling and marking, which were so keen that the Maoris rarely ran two yards before being challenged. The Maori team was: —Potaka, Falwasser, Phillips, Robinson, Love, McDonald, Ivingi, S. Gemmell, J. Stewart, .Mailing, Haupapa, Tatnna, Manihera and Dennis. November 18 —East Midlands. November 20 —London County. November 24 —Hampshire. December I—Lancashire. December 5-^-Bordeaux. December 9 —Limoges. December 12 —Bayonne. December 1G —Pau. December 19 —Beziers.
