SITE FOR HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING.
DONATED BY MAORI OWNERS,
Some years ago the local school committee took steps to acquire the vacant section adjoining Ihakara Garden from the native owners for the purpose of putting down a model playground but subsequently the committee decided to /use the site for school swimming baths. The transfer however, was not implemented although the owners verbally consented to same. Then an agitation was made to secure the site for public swimming baths. There was a diversity of opinion on the question, the school eommtitee still holding that the site should he obtained for school purposes, and it was pointed out that it would he ideal for the extra accommodation required for secondary school purposes. A sub-committee was set up to again interview the Maori owners and they have signed a document transferring the property to the Education Board upon which to erect a building. The Board will now take the necessary steps to have the building erected. The generous action of the native owners will lie suitably acknowledged by those concerned.
