NEWS AND NOTES.

At one time it was a difficult matter to obtain domestic servants and there were demands to the Government to induce more of this class of immigrant to come to New Zealand. Now apparently matters have altered. The other day a Wanganui woman advertised for a domestic and received 15 applications.

A remarkable result of the wet weather during the last two months has been the appearance of mushrooms in rural localities round Wanganui. Mushrooms in spring are a rarity, but those who have tasted those now appearing state that they are none the worse for being out of season. Described as “one of life’s problems,” Margaret Wood, 7(1, with a record of 202 convictions, appeared at the Auckland Magistrate’s Court charged with being idle and disorderly. The accused said she was released only two days previously, after serving a long sentence of imprisonment. Mr F. K. Hunt, S.M. : All we can do is to send you back again for three months. According to Mr. .7. W. Poynton, K.M., an attempt will be made in this country to have Justices of the Peace placed in office by elective methods. Speaking before the Mat ama to branch of the Justice ol the Peace Association, Mr. Poynton said that the system was really an abomination. All but 10 Judges in the United States, these being Supreme Court Judges, and of very high standing, were elected. Needless to say, their minds were not actuated by principles of justice or fair play. New Zealand would do well, said Mr Poynton, to fight against the introduction of the eleclive method for appointing Justices of the Peace in this country.
