BANK CLERK’S DOWNFALL.
SPECULATING IN MINING SHARES AND SLOW HORSES Christchurch, October 29. For stealing £2,000 belonging to the National Bank otj New Zealand, William Henry Melvin was sentenced to-day to be detained for reformative treatment for three years. Mr Sargeant, who appeared for Melvin, said that he was 27 years of age and had been employed in the bank for 11 years. He was an exceedingly capable officer. Melvin had speculated in mining shares as well as slow horses. Mr Justice Stringer: What was this young man’s salary? Mr Sargent: It was £3OO a year. He is single. His Honour said that the prisoner had robbed his employers bV a systematic manipulation of the bank records. It was necessary to impose a substantial sentence.
