COBHAM’S NARROW ESCAPE.
STORY OF A MISSING SPANNER
Sin Alan Cobham’s short flight to Manchester nearly brought disaster the other day, says an English cable. A faulty sparking plug forced him to land at Nuneaton, in Warwickshire, and in doing so he just missed a cable carrying 6,000 volts. The aviator was late for the lunch given in his honour, arriving at 3.30 p.m. in a fresh machine, af’ter having} had to walk for miles to secure it. “Hullo everybody. Sorry I’m late,” he said on arrival.
At the same time Sir Alan was very annoyed. The trouble could easily have been remedied with a spanner, but there was not one aboard. Someone had forgotten to put the tool kit in, and none of the spanners borrowed from farmers and motorists would lit.
