At the conclusion of the seventh race the President (Mr W. T. Jewell) presented the cups. In doing so he congratulated the winners on their- success ancl complimented them on their fine riding. The ultimate success of the club, he said, depended on the quality and number of competitors. The local club had been particularly fortunate in this respect. This was only the club’s second year and the competitors had assisted them materially in making them wh’at they how were, one of the premier clubs in the Dominion. He also took the opportunity to thank the donors of tne cups who also, had been, in a large measure, responsible for enabling the Foxton Club to obtain the prestige it had gained in two years, and which was not reached by many clubs for a great number of years. In referring to* the executive, he said that their work had been qf labour of love and he hoped that they had given satisfaction to the riders, the donors of the cups, and the public generally. The cups were then presented as follows: — Coughtrey Cup, value 10 Guineas, L. M. Rankine, Masterton. Harold Brown Cup, value 10 Guineas, G. W. Dixon, Palmerston North. Licensed Cup, value 35 Guineas, J. Arnott, Hawke’s Bay. Austin-Johnston Cup, value 5 Guineas, L. Coulthard, Epsom, Auckland. The following were the officials: President: Mr W. T. Jewell; judges: Messrs S. Austin and J. M. Thomson; first aid man: Mr J. Martin; machine inspector: Mr C. Billings; starter: Mr P. Jack; handicappers Messrs Palmer and Page (Palmerston N.); timekeepers: Messrs R. Parkes, H. Hutchins, Smith and Capt. Buckley; lap scorers: (track) Messrs G. Alexander, W. E. Barber, W. Ross and A. Stevenson; (board) Messrs S. Barber, W. Jewell jnr., Christie, Warwick, Barron; padclock and track stewards: Messrs C. A. Pearson, R. Bryant, E. Parkin, and F. C. Hay; call stewards: Messrs D. Christie, D. Barron and G. F. Smith; protest committee: Messrs W. T. Jewell, W. E, Barber, and R. Bryant; treasurer: Mr E. Parkin; secretary: Mr F. Rimmer; assistant, secretary: Mr D. R. Ogilvy; gate steward: Mi- H. Hamer.
Among the visitors present were Mr J. Liuklater, M.P., and Messrs W. A. Spragg (President N.Z. A.C.U), 11. B. Burrell (Executive, N.Z.A.C.U.) and A. Way (Secretary N.Z.A.C.U.). Larkins orchestra provided a programme of music during the day in front of the grandstand. The catering arrangements were in the hands, of Mr J. Walls. •There was a little delay in getting the events off but this was due to no fault on behalf of the officials. The trouble lay with the ridersj who were very slow in sending in their acceptances. Percy Coleman was dogged with
bad luck yesterday. The seizure of the chain of his bike precluded him from competing further in the events. In conversation with our representative, he said that the track was very good. There were two “wavy” patches on the east and west sides which made it dangerous and riders, to negotiate these bends, had to considerably slacken off speed. Under the conditions he would not attempt to lower his own record for the flying mile. Percy Coleman put up the fastest time yesterday, lapping repeatedly in 55 seconds.
