DEPUTATION VETOED.
v HIGH-HANDED ACTION. '
BY CHAIRMAN OF EDUCATION
BOARD
At last night’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board,' the Chairman refused to allow a deputation to be heard at the meeting.
Mr. J. Aitken protested against the treatment of the deputation.
“It is very regrettable,” he said, “that you should have refused to hear the deputation. It was a very high-handed action.” The chairman said that he, as chairman, had the sole right to say whether or not a deputation could give its views. If was not through lack, of courtesy that he had declined to hear them. The Board had a very heavy order paper, and lie had not thought it advisable that they should hear the deputation at present. Mr A. J. Joblin: Do I understand you to say that the chairman has power to' veto a deputation of reputable citizens?
The chairman: That is so. Mr TT. M. McTntyre said this was one of the occasions when the chairman had rightly used his discretion. Ah’ J. K. Hornblow considered that in this case the chairman had exceeded his prerogative. Mr E. F. Hemingway pointed out that some time ago the Board had laid down a definite principle that deputations should not be heard unless the chairman decided that the deputation should come along. The chairman had not overstepped the mark. On the contrary, he had treated 'the deputation very courteously.
Mr Hornblow referred to an attempt of a former chairman of the Board to prevent a deputation from placing its just views before the Board. Any deputation to the Board had a right to be heard provided proper notice was given. In this case the chairman had exceeded the powers vested in him.
Air Aitken said the motion referred to by Air ITemmingway had been more honoured in the breach than in the observance.
The chairman, referring to Air Aitken’s opening remarks, said tho trend of discussion seemed to be in the direction of passing a vote of censure on the chairman.
The deputation were present but were not allowed to speak. .
