ATTEMPTED HOLD-UP AT MIRANUI.
Last Thursday night, while a flax worker, Meredith Fitzsimmons was taking his ease in the men’s quarters at the central camp, Miranui, he was startled by the apparition of a masked man who demanded money with menaces, says the M.D. Times. The other refused and was attacked by an improvised “sandbag”—several stones tied in a handkerchief. Fitzsimmons sounded a lusty alarm, and the intruder decamped. On Saturday morning, at the Palmerston N. Police Court, Neils Pedcr Sorenson, or Hansen, was arraigned before two J.’sP., charged that he did assault Meredith Fitzsimmons with intent to rob, on October 14 and that on the following day he stole 5/- and a hat, said lo be worth 10/-, the property of one Falls!ins and Zulurn respective!y. The accused is a discharged flaxworker, aged 34, and appeared recently in Court as the result of a drunken brawl. He was remanded until Friday.
