MAINAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING

The Manawatu County Council met at Sanson on Tuesday, those present being: Councillors H. H. Hunt (chairman), D. Reid, J. Boyce, W. E. Barber, H. J. Fagan, J. AlcKelvie, and W. E. Pearce. CORRESPONDENCE.

From the Wanganui Education Board, offering to contribute £7 towards the cost of diverting a storm water drain adjacent to the school teachers’ residence at Oroua Downs, provided the Council undertakes the work. The letter stated that the existing state of affairs created a menace about the teachers’ residence. —Referred to the County engineer for report. Paiaka, Ltd.., Haxmillcrs, wrote, asking that the Mill road into Paiaka be made passable. —Cr Barber and the County engineer to report. ALTERATIONS TO RATE ROLL. The following alterations were made to the rate roll: —Job Harris to F. L. McKinnon, pt. section 38, Sandon; est. R. C. Andrew to Mary E. Andrew, lots 12/15, 79/84, 87/90, 93/100, Sanson; G. H. Garrett to Airs F. E. S. Gray, section 55, Tangimoana; W. P. C. Woodroof e to Margaret Barton, 5A No. 6A and 5A No. 68, Himatangi; H. J. Mason to M. J. Ryan, lot 11 pt. section 320 ; Carnarvon; L. T. McLean to S. J. Teaz, lot 6, sect. 384, Carnarvon; I. C. Reed to C. J. Adams, section 38, Tangimoana. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The County Engineer reported as follows on the Awabou Riding. — The bridge on the Kuri Kuri road has been put in order for traffic, and minor repairs' carried out along the road. It would be advisable to repair some of the soft patches along the above road with several loads of sand as the road is dangerous in places. Stone crusher. —The foundations for the Hecla crusher are now completed, and good progress is being made with the erection of the new hopper. It would be advisable to protect the Hecla and the screening machinery from the weather. Cost of material and labour, £l5O. Good results were obtained at the crushing plant for the past month, 1,500 cubic yards of stone were crushed into five different grades, and firstclass road material. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT. The tramway manager reported as follows: —The chief items of traffic for the month were: Minerals and manure 185 tons, general merchandise 45 tons, grain 201 tons, metal 305 tracks, eggs 146 crates, timber 14,000 super, feet; fares amounted to £1 8s 3d. The accounts show a debit balance of £46 16s for the month’s working.

During the recent wet weather goods that have been coming onto the line have in several cases been wet, caused by faulty sheets. Some of the sheets were found to have large holes in them. In some cases the Department is putting three sheets on trucks, which means that the Council are paying extra hire with no extra revenue coming in.

The manager drew the Council’s attention to the necessity of making provision for the turning of rolling stock. A triangle could be put in at the crusher site at a cost of about £25. —Received.
