THE SHANNON BRIDGE.

The Shannon Chamber of Commerce’s suggestion that a temporary span be erected at the Shannon bridge came before the Alanawatu County Council at its monthly meeting on Tuesday. Cr. Hunt (chairman] said that it would not bq wise to put up a temporary span.

Cr. Barber painted out that the punt had only stopped once during the past month, and had been, since starting, most satisfactory.

The Chairman remarked that the Council had nothing to do with the bridge. The Council had offered to control the punt, but no suggestion was made that the Council should control the bridge. The letter} from the Shannon Chamber of Commerce should go to the Horowhenua County Council. The suggestion of the Chairman was adopted, and it was further decided to write the Shannon Chamber of Commerce, pointing out that the Council did not control the bridge. . -« A letter was also received from the Public Works Department, advising that the preparation of the bridge plans was now in hand, and all other preparatory work had been completed. Cr. Hunt remarked that he noticed that Cr. Barber had been instrumental in getting the Department to take action, and he felt that the thanks of the Council were due to Cr. Barber for his action.

Cr. Barber pointed out that the settlers were becoming anxious as to when the work of building. the new bridge would be put in hand, and he had approached the member for the district (Air Linkltaer, ALP.), who had interviewed the Department. It was satisfactory to know that the new bridge was on the way. .
