MANAWATU-OROUA RIVER BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The regular monthly meeting of the Manawatu-Oroua River Board was held in Palmerston N. on Thursday, presided over by Mr W. S. Carter (chairman). Also present were Messrs V. E. C. Harrison, H. Akers, H. J. Wilton, A. Akers and J. Richardson. An apologia for absence was received from Mr F. C. Hay, the Board’s engineer, who is at present in Christchurch.

A letter was. received from the Department of Internal Affairs, advising that matters in connection with the stop-banks on the Oroua River were receiving the attention of the Public Works Department. Leave of absence was granted Messrs B. G. Gower (who is at present in Australia) and A. Seifert. THE COMMISSION. In connection with the recent sittings of the Commission, the Chairman stated that he thought the Board should be satisfied with the way its case had been presented. Personally the speaker had been very pleased with the way the Board’s solicitor (Mr P. E. Baldwin) had looked after their interests, and he thbught they could not have been better served. Mr Hay’sscheme had stood the test, and without exception, both sides had agreed that the scheme was the only one practicable. With regard to the Commission’s findings, the Board coull only hope for the best. The personnel of the Commission had displayed a thorough grip of the situation, and had been well aware of the fact that although it would cost a great deal of money, something would have to be done. The sitting of the 'Commission had undoubtedly cleared away any misunderstandings concerning the Board’s proposals, and. the Chairman thought that the Board was now on a much sounder basis. Several members of. the Board endorsed the Chairman’s remarks concerning the way in which Mr Baldwin had worked in the Board s interests, and it was resolved to write Mr Baldwin an appreciatory letter, and to grant him a bonus of 50 guineas. Accounts totalling £254 were passed for payment.
