Air G. AfeNamara is appointed to t he position of Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department, in succession to Mr A. T. Alarkman, who will retire at the end of the present month. "With the appointment of Air McNamara to the head of the Department is revealed the most rapid rise in the history of the Post and Telegraph service. Joining the service at Invercargill in 1890, Air AlcNainara lias been through practically every branch. He is 45 years of age. The sudden death took place at Feilding on Thursday, from heart failure, of Air Norman Gorton, who had just celebrated his 60th birthday, and was on duty up to the time of*lii's death for, although lie was to retire from the position of manager of Levin and Co. that day, lie was acting in an oilicial capacity on some valuation business-at Alarton, when he was taken suddenly ill ami passed away before medical aid arrived. Air Gorton began operations with his father, the late Colonel Gorton, in Bulls, iu 1880, and the firm of Stevens and Gorton were well known throughout the district. Air Norman Gorton finally went to Feilding as manager of the local branch. He married Miss Willis, of “Wooden Dean,” Alarton, and leaves his widow and two daughters (Airs Aleyrick and Airs Alonrad, of Palmerston N.) and one son (Air K. F. Gorton), his only surviving brother is Air L. Gorton.
