CONTROL OF RED MITE.

▼ LIME-SULPHUR SPRAY.

There has recently been some discussion among orchardists with regard to the efficient control of red mite on apple trees. This pest is particularly prevalent in delicious, one of the most popular varieties. At the Huapai Fruitgrowers’ annual meeting, Mr L. Hanlon, a veteran orchardist, stated that while fair control was undoubtedly obtainable by the use of red oil sprays, which has been the standard practice, he had found that an application of lime-sulphur at a strength of one in fifteen followed immediately by an application of red oil at one in twelve, was absolutely effective in destroying even the eorgs. He had completed pruning 300 delicious trees, which were badly affected two seasons ago, and were treated in this way. Though a thorough search had been made he could find no sign of eggs. He asked other growers to try this means of control, and carefully watch results with a view to proving the efficacy of the treatment.
