FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.
'MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held in the Secretary’s office yesterday, presided over by the Chairman (J. Linklater, Esq., M.P.). Also present were Messrs J. A. Nash, M.P., J. Mortensen, J. Chrystall, W. E. Barber and the secretary (Mr Roore Rangiheuea). LIGHT LINE TO THE BEACH.
Arising out of the minutes, Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., said he would like to see the scope of the committee set up at the last meeting increased. It had been decided that the committee cqnfer with the School Committees in the district. He suggested that the Public Works Department should be asked what the cost of the proposed work would be, and a conference should then be held of local bodies from all parts of the district, and a petition signed at that conference, so that when the matter was finally placed before the House they would have some substantial backing.
Mr Chrystall: Nothing will be done before next session, will it? Mr Nash said that a conference would be called before Christinas of all local bodies, school committees, chambers of commerce and borough councils, etc. The Chairman said that school committees should not be overlooked in the conference. He understood that the last two school excursions to Plimmerton had not been satisfactory. Wet weather had been experienced, and there had not been any conveniences at Plimmerton for them, with the result that a number of children had suffered thereby. It was decided that the scope of the committee be extended, and that the matter be left in the hands of Messrs J. A. Nash and J. Linklater, M’s.P. STREET NAME'S. The question of providing suitable street names; for Beach streets was discussed. Mr J. A). Nash considered that the Maori names should be used. They would be in keeping with the place, and its present name, Te Wfharangi.” He suggested that Mr J. Stevens, of Palmerston N., should be approached to supply suitable names, together with their
meanings. It was decided to adopt Mr Nash’s suggestion. RAILWAY MATTERS.
The Chairman mid Mr J. A. Nash were authorised to sign the working agreement drawn up by the Railway Department in connection with the working of the -wharf. A long letter was received from the Minister for Railways in connection with certain complaints re railage of goods, etc., and stating that the Department’s business agent would visit Foxton in connection with the compaints at an early date.
It was' decided to hold the matter over until the arrival of the agent, and to, write' the Department, reminding them that the agent had not yet visited Foxton. WATER FOR THE BEACH. A letter was received from Messrs Rasmussen and Parkinson, suggesting that the Board sink an artesian well at the Heads, to provide water for use by visitors, in peferenee to the erection of a tank at the Pilot’s residence. The Chairman said that there was always an uncertainty about sinking a bore. . Mr Nash said that the Beach was growing every year. A 2,000 gal- ■ lon tank would cost about £3O, and in a year or so they would need another one or two. He thought an artesian well would be a good idea, but the water would be hard. If they] could be sure of the supply he would say go in for it. Mr Chrystall said the hardness could easily be taken out of the water by spraying it through a rose. A 3-inch pipe should deliver 4,000 gallons of water an hour, with an increase of pressure to what was obtained locally. It was decided to ask the wellsinkers to confer with the local committee, who could have power to act. It was decided to call tenders for the erection of concrete and breeze 2,000 gallon tanks at the Pilot’s residence at the Beach. BEACH LEASES. The following notice of motion, moved at the last meeting of the Board, by J. Chrystall, came up for consideration: — “That, all tenants holding sections at the Manawatu Heads under lease from the Board, be offered the right to have their respective leases extended for a further term of'l4 years from the date of expiration of the existing lease at a ground rent to be fixed by arbitrators appointed under the provisions of the Arbitration Act, within six months of the termination of the present lease, and subject to their executing a clause to give effect to this resolution to be endorsed by the Board’s solicitor. That this resolution be referred to the Board’s solicitor to see that, it does not disturb' any existing condition and if it does not that this resolution be given effect to.’’ t
The matter was thoroughly discussed, after which the motion was put and carried.
