MISSING AWARUA DISCOVERED
SMART BY H.M.S. DUNEDIN. Shortly after 11.30 o’clock on Saturday morning the H.M.S. Dunedin, despatched on Friday from the Hauraki Gulf, reported by wireless that she had picked up the distressed steamer Awarua, just north of Gisborne. The members of the Awarua’s crew are reported to be all well, and were supplied with provisions, and when the weather moderates the vessel will be taken in tow hv the warship and brought to port.
Judging from the position in which she was found, the Awarua has been at the mercy of the wind. On Tuesday night a steamer, apparently the Awarua, was reported to be off AA T ellington. The theory advanced is that she was caught by the strong westerly wind and carried through the Straits. Apparently she was then caught by the southerly which came up later and carried up the East Coast.
