IMPROVING GRADING METHOD'S.

GREATER. GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE PROMISED.

Wellington, Yesterday

Mr. J. Linklater recently asked the Minister of Agriculture, whether he will take steps to appoint inspectors and instructors for flaxmills, with the object of improving the grade of hemp from the flaxmills of the Dominion.

. Hon. 0. Hawken to-day replied that the benefit that would accrue from practical instruction at many of the phorium mills is fully realised and some work ,iii this direction has already been done with good results. Steps are now being taken to strengthen the hemp grading staff so that such instruction may be given to a greater extent than has hitherto been possible. HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated the lltli instant, reads: — Hemp, Manila market quiet and easier. “J” grade, SeptemberNovember sold down to £44 10s. The Sisal market is dull with a downward tendency. No. 1 is being freely offered at £42 10s to £43 spot. Better demand' is reported for inferior brands. The New Zealand market is easier with high points being freely offered for shipment at £37 10s, and fair at £34 10s. No business has been reported except for a small parcel of fair afloat which sold at £34 15s.
