FOXTON TENNIS CLUB.

ANNUAL REPORT

The following is the annual report of the'Foxton Tennis Club to be submitted to the annual meeting of the Club on Tuesday next: — “Your committee has much pleasure in presenting the Annual Report and Balance-sheet for the season ending 31st August, 1926. “The past season has been a red letter one in every respect. For the past five years it has been recognised that the club has been cramped for room. Various seliem- ~ es have been suggested, examined, and rejected. At the beginning of the season the club was offered a very suitable section at the corner of Avenue Road and Johnston St., and after going thoroughly into the matter, the section was acquired on very advantageous terms. This section has been sown down in grass, with ample room for five courts. Experts who have examined it agree that it is eminently suitable, and that with care it can be made into one of the beauty spots of Foxton. “Inter-Club Matches. —The past season has shown a welcome increase in the number of inter-club matches played. Matches were played against Bulls, iLevin and Shannon. Of eight matches played, four were won, three were lost and one drawn. For the first time ' since the inception of the competition, the club was successful in winning the Newman Cup, holding it till near the end of the season, when it again found its way back to the Bulls Club.

“Competitions. Unlike former years, the Walton Rose Bowl and the Men’s Cup competitions were brought to a conclusion during the season. The handicapping committee did their work well and some very exciting games were witnessed. The winner of the Walton Rose Bowl proved to be Miss E. Owen, who defeated Miss R. Barber in the final, 48 —46. C. Procter won the Men’s Cup, L. C. Bryant being run-ner-up. In order to improve the doubles play, a department where Foxton has always'been weak, the Robinson Ferns were changed from a singles competition to a handicap combined doubles competition. Many interesting games were played, and the competition had the desired effect. Miss E. Owen and C. Procter are the present holders of the Ferns. In the Soldiers’ and Bryant Trophies for “B” grade players, no interest was taken, and it is evident that the incoming committee will have to devise some other means of using these trophies.

“A welcome increase in the number of ladder matches played was shown, ■ over seventy games being played. “Social.—Owing to 'the Town Hall fire no annual ball has been held. In an effort to raise money for the new courts, a series of cabr aret dances were held in the Masonic Hall, but owing to various causes were not the financial sue- ' cess it was anticipated they would be.

“Finance. —At the beginning of the season the bank overdraft was £SO 0s 9d. Before acquiring the new courts it stood at £37. In order to lay down the courts and to pay off the overdraft, a mortgage of £l5O was raised. The hank balance at present is £5 9s 6d. In conclusion your committee wishes to thank all those who assisted the club in any way whatever, and also the Press for the prominence given to the club’s matters.”
