ADVENTUROUS JOURNEY.
VICAR’S TRYING EXPERIENCES
An adventurous journey was undertaken last week by the vicar of Otorohanga, the Rev. C. J. Bush King (says an Auckland exchange), on the oe'easion of his monthly visit to the Kawhia district. The route from Otorohanga passed along the Ngutani Road, and it is unmetalled for about sixty miles. When halfway through the bush, Mr King’s car became bogged and he had to remain there all night, and was hauled out by a friendly settler next afternoon. Several punctures were experienced, as the journey continued, and on one occasion the tyre flew off a wheel. The traveller reached Kawhia just in time for the evening church service after having been twenty-seven hours on the way with practically nothing to eat.
A journey was then made across the harbour to Kinokalni, Mr Bush King accompanying his car, which was placed on board a punt and hauled by a launch. When they were just outsj.de the Heads, the weather changed and a strong wind sprang up. The punt was soon found to be sinking and it was decided.to run for shelter to an island, where the punt and car were bea'ched until the following day. Next morning, when the tide was suitable, a launch went out and recovered both the motor-car and (he punt. The punt was leaking badly and had to be kept bailed on the return trip of three or four miles. After lauding, a path was made through the rough scrub and the metalled road was reached, (he main troubles being then at an end.
