OBITUARY.
MRS ALEX. SPEIRS, SNR., AGED 70 YEARS. There passed peacefully away in the presence of her family yesterday morning, at her late residence, Robinson St., Mrs Mary Ann Speirs, wife of Mr Alex. Speirs, snr., aged 70 years. The late Mrs Speirs had been ill for upwards of 12 months and for the last six months had been 'confined to her bed.
The late Mrs Speirs was the eldest daughter of the late Mr and Mrs James McMaster, pioneer settlers of the Lower Valley, Wairarapa, where she was born. In 1878 she was married to Mr Alex. Speirs in St. John’s Church, Wellington (the ceremony being performed by the late Rev. James Patterson). In 1889 Mr and Mrs Speirs settled in Foxton where they have since resided. Deceased was devoted to her home and family, yet no case of sickness or distress in the neighbourhood escaped her sympathetic and practical help. She inherited all the sterling qualities which marked the pilgrim fathers and mothers of this Dominion. Her husband has lost a devoted helpmate and the family can cherish the memory of an affectionate and loyal mother. Those who knew the late Mrs Speirs intimately have lost a loyal and sympathetic friend. The late Mrs Speirs leaves a husband and family of six sons (Messrs Alex., John, Robert, Claude, Richard and William) and two daughters, Misses A. and B. Speirs) to mourn their loss.
The funeral will lake place tomorrow (Sunday) leaving the residence, Robinson St., at 2 p.m. for the Foxton cemetery. The Rev. J. H. Brcdin, of Palmerston N., a personal friend of deceased, will conduct the funeral ceremony.
