NEWS AND NOTES.

A lady with her own views on high finance, recently wrote to a New Zealand firm as follows: “Just a line to ask you whether if I invest a few pounds in your company, say twenty shares for a start, and then keep on buying more shares, a few at a time, would you lend me say, £IOO. I would let you have the shares for security. We have about £9 a week coming in, but I want £IOO at once. I would also pay interest.” The letter ended with a hopeful “let me know by return.” The following amusing letter was received by . the Navy League the other day from a Maori boy of Koputaroa, Levin: “I have to thank you for the new badge you sent me. I got the badge but, no letter of what my duty is and what I got to do. I have left school now, so what do I have to pay for my membership now? Please tell the Naval Officer to stir the Defensive Department up for I have written two’ letters to them (Levin Def. Depart-

ment), and have not got an answer yet.” Some youngsters at Kaikaraka indulged in a novel form of sport, which was reminiscent of the os-trich-riding episode in “Swiss Family Robinson” (says the “Northern Advocate”). When three porpoises became trapped in the Waikaraka stream, the daring lads threw a lasso over the tail of the largest of the fish and allowed it to tow them up and down the river. They seemingly enjoyed the experience until it was ended by ( the falling tide leaving the porpoise stranded. Since then the three fish have been skinned.
