FIXTURES, 21st AUGUST. JUNIOR: Manawatu v. Horowhenua, at Levin Domain, 2.45 p.m. CURTAIN-RAISER. Northern Thirds v. Southern Thirds at Levin Domain, 1.15 p.m. Admission 1/-; Stand 6d. HAWKE’S BAY RETAINS THE RANFURLY SHIELD. Napier, August 14. At Napier on Saturday, the Wellington team which had gone north with the determination to, in the Spartan phrase, “return with their Shields or on them,” were overwhelmingly defeated in a Ranfurly Shield match, by no less a margin than 58 to 8. Hawke’s Bay successfully staved off a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield here to-day, by defeating Wellington in a one-sided match by 58 to 8. The weather was glorious, and the crowd estimated at 12,000. AVellington attacked with vigour from the outset, but it was only a flash in the pan, and by the middle of the first half, were a beaten team.

The Hawke’s Bay’s team penetrated the rearguard attacks, and heavy forward rushes proved the Waterloo of AVellington, whose tackling was weak.

AAlellington kicked off, and four minutes from the start, Nepia dropped a beautiful penalty goal. Hawke’s Bay kept up the pressure, and as a result of a back movement, Grensidje sleoredj, but missed the kick: 6 —o.

A fierce back movement by the homesters was nullified by stern tackling, but eventually C. Brownlie forced his way over, Nepia converting: 11 —0.

Hawke’s Bay’s next score came from Single, as a result of a forward rush. Nepia again converted. Three minutes later Grcnside crossed, making the score 19 —0 Just before half-time Grenside again scored, and Nepia added the extra points: Hawke’s Bay 24 —0. At half-time, South, Porter, and Wilson, of AVellington, retired injured, and AAAarden, Jessop and McKay filled their places. The second half was a complete walk-over, Hawke’s Bay running the opposition to a standstill. Barry scored for AVellington, and Nicholls converted: 24—5. This was followed by tries for Hawke’s Bay by Johnson, Blake and Cooke, Nepia converting the latter two.

Mark Nicholls then landed a penalty goal, following which Kirkpatrick (2), Grenside (2) and Swain scored tries, Nepia converting two, and Grenside one. Time sounded with the score 58—8.

Mr. E. Eckhold refereed. AVilson (AA r ellington) was sent to hospital suffering from concussion.

New Plymouth High School defeated Te Aute at New Plymouth on Saturday by 16 points to nil.
