FOXTON AMATEUR CYCLING CLUB.

SHORTT WINS STX MILE ROAD RACE.

Yesterday afternoon the Foxton Amateur Cycling' Chib held a six mile road race, which attracted ■considerable attention. The Main street was lined With spectators to witness the race which started at the Triangle and finished at the Post Office, after the competitors had traversed the Main, Union, Johnston Sts and Avenue Road block fiv r e times.

Twenty competitors faced the starter and the handicaps were as follows:

A. Chcnot, C. Shortt, D. Knott, 0. IT. Wright (scr.); C. Huff, Bayliss, (5 secs); J. Potaka, 0. Coley, G. Westwood, R. Barry, (15 secs.); D. Satherley, (20 secs.); W. Broad, J. Gupivell, K. Martin, (25 secs); J. Smith, I. Wright, P, Honour, P. Little, (35 sees); B. Chalk (50 secs.); E. Coley (55 sqcs).

C. Shortt went to the front where, after the second round, he took up a position at the rear of the limit men. Knott kept close behind. In the last lap Shortt took the lead at the Town Hall corner and a great race ensued up Main Street, Knott being beaten for first place by half a wheel. Martin ran a good third. Contrary to expectations, Chenot and Huff did not come to the fore. The former was considerably out, of training. At the conclusion of the six mile race the schoolboys’ event (one mile) was got off,, followed by a married-men’s race (one mile) and slow race.

The entries for the boys’ race were as follows: —R. Coley, B. Coley, A. Martin, T. Perreau, R. Gay, A. Sharp, H. Fee J. Hirini, Wanklyn, Lay Ming, G. H. Leong, R. Ball, J. Delany, E. Ball, J. Satherley, E. Coley, Parfitt, Wi Hirini,. L. King, M. Moffatt.

The winners were as follows: — Delany I,_E. Ball 2, L. King 3, M. Moffatt 4, E. Coley 5. Married Mien’s Race: —W. Williams 1, P, Little 2, H. Hutchins 3. Slow Race (20 competitors) C. Huff 1.

Mr, G. F. Smith officiated as starter in all the above events.

In the evening a smoke concert was held in Perreau’s Rooms when about 50 cyclists were present. Mr. M. E. Perreau (President) occupied the chair. Toasts honoured during the evening were “The King,” “The Cycling Club,” “The Entertainers,” “The Riders,” and “The Press.’ In proposing the toast of the “cycling club,” the President said it was very gratifying to the Committee to see how the young men of the town were taking on cycling, and he congratulated the committee on bringing the affairs of the Club up to its present high standard. Cycling was a good sport for the young men of the town as it made for fitness and good health. One thing could be said of all the local members that stood to their credit: they were triers. The speaker was officially the President of the Club, but lie would like the members to look on Mr. G. F. Smith as the head of affairs. He paid a tribute to Mr. Smith’s energies on’ behalf of the Club and said that praise was also due to Messrs Billings and Little for their work in the Club’s interests. The citizens appreciated a cycle club in their midst and this fact was evidenced by the large attendance at the race that day, and also by the nufnber.of trophies that had been donated for the first ingMr. P. Little responded. Mr. G. F. Smith proposed the toast of “the riders” and in doing so urged all members to get down to hard training again as as soon as they were fit the Committee would put on another race. That day’s race had shown that those who trained the hardest were sure winners. The future of the Club was particularly bright. Mr. E. Sliortt replied. The President then presented the trophies as follows: Racing cycle presented by Messrs Reynolds and Co. Ltd., Wellington: C. Shortt; tyres and tubes, presented by the Dunlop Rubber Co., Wellington: D. Knott; electric torch, (Club Trophy): K. Martin. Schoolboys:—G. Coley’s trophy: J. Delany; Mi’. Christie’s trophy: E. Ball; Mr. Mattar’s trophy: L. King; Mr. D. Ball’s trophy: M. Moffatt; Mr. Little’s trophy: E. Coley. During the evening vocal and musical items were rendered by Messrs. A. Smith, G. F. Smith, I. Corn, B. Hinds, E. Honour, Jensen, and W. Williams.

A most enjoyable evening was brought to a ©lose with the sirging of the National Anthem.
