NEWS AND NOTES.

A fortunate discovery was made when boring for water on the site of the new Kerepeehi Hotel which comes into being as the result of the restoration of licenses in the Oliinemuri district (says an exchange). It was found that the hotel had been built over a mineral hot spring, and it will now be possible to utilise the waters in the bathrooms throughout the building.. The water is said to possess certain curative properties. “And how did you measure the distance, .constable 1 ?” asked counsel of a witness in a recent Court case in the south. “With my boots,” was flie constable’s reply. “And how much do you allow for your feet ” pursued counsel “About a foot and a-half,” was the constable’s astonishing answer. He did not say whether that included one or two feet! Says the' Wairarapa News: —A short time back we noted the fact that at a dance held at Parkvale by the Waihakekc School Committee, things became rather mixed, and a real ding dong bout of fisticuffs took place outside the hall. One Carterton man suffered badly, but his friend stepped in and cleaned up the victor. We considered that the incident was over and done with. On Tuesday evening last the Park vale bachelors held their annual ball and two of the invited guests showed their manliness and breeding by staging another fight, this time in the°ha?l on the stage. Unluckily for them, one of the Carterton police had taken it into his head to be present on that night and promptly settled the dispute. Both the contestants will have to appear before the Magistrate to explain their conduct. The Parkvale people have gained great popularity in riming dances, and it is a very great shame that they should be subjected to the ignominy heaped upon them by the ignorant low-down mix-ups of a hooligan element.
