JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOLS.
POLICY OF CAUTION URGED. The report of the committee appointed to frame resolutions on the junior high school question was adopted by the Technical Education Conference on Wednesday as follows : That this conference, having heard the views of the Director of Education upon (1) the proposed junior high schools; (2) junior technical schools; and (3) composite schools embracing both academic and technical education and having fully considered the views expressed, together with those of members of the association, resolves : (1) That in the opinion of the conference the results of the experimental junior high schools are not such as to justify the claims of those urging' their general introduction throughout the Dominion. (2) That, therefore, the change should hot be made until greater proof is produced that the aims of the junior high school in better aiding children to.take up manual and technical work have been assured, and that the cost of the change is fully understood and recognised by the public. (3) That to legislate at present in favour of the junior high school would be to legislate in advance of public opinion. (4) That the conference is of opinion that if a change is made where technical and secondary schools now exist junior deartments should be associated with each.
