MANAWATU-OROUA RIVERS BOARD.
OPPOSITION TO SCHEME. A meeting of ratepayers opposed to the scheme of flood protection proposed by the Manawatu-Oroua River Board was held at Palmerston on Saturday. After members of the board had addressed the meeting, it was decided to petition the Government asking that the River Board be abolished. It was decided to form an association called the Manawatu Ratepayers’ Association, comprising all ratepayers affected by the scheme. The following executive was elected: Messrs. M. A. Eliott (chairman), A. and D. Buchanan, D. B. McEwen, A. Sutherland, A. ! Guy, and A. Mathieson. The following motion was also carried unanimously:' —“That this massi meeting of ratepayers protests against the commission and the proposal to spend £450,000 on the Manawatu River scheme,, which, if carried into effect, would entail heavy rating on the local bodies cited.” It was further decided that the executive appoint a deputation to go to Wellington in support of the petition to the Government. The association will meet again on Saturday morning.
