CORRESPONDENCE.
(To the Editor). Sir, —Business people must have been astounded to - read in the Herald that the Borough Council should suggest imposing a tax on service cars passing through Foxton. The reason given because they “pulled up in the town.” Why, sir, the absurdity of it is too apparent. It has been suggested, time and again, that motorists should be encouraged to come into town and not pass through by a back street. The passengers, by these service ears, are very numerous, and if they spend half an hour in Foxton it is for the good of business generally. The local taxis have no reason to complain for often passengers alight here and engage a taxi to take them further. Surely, sir, we should not like to see these cars make a non stop run to Levin. Trusting a word to the wise (?) will be sufficient. I am etc,
FOXTON.
Sir, —I asked one of the carnival queen committee secretaries where it was proposed to erect the swimming baths and was informed that no site had been fixed. As this question is being asked by others could you inform the public what the committee has done in the matter or whether another site squabble will take place. A public meeting, which I attended, carried a motion deciding that the baths should be on Easton Park but the Borough Council (not the present Council) favoured a site alongside the Council Chambers, the late Mayor favoured the riverside site and other sites mentioned are next to Ihakara Garden and the old tennis court. I think if the site were fixed it would settle a lot of talk and assist in raising the fund. Thanking you in anticipation, I am etc, BATHS. [No site has yet been decided upon, but probably the icarnival committee in conjunction with the Borough Council will convene a public meeting to discuss the subject. This point should not, however, be allowed to prejudice the Carnival effort. —Ed. ll.]
